Devlog 1 (10/18/24)

Hey guys! New update to the game here, I guess this is where I'll post everything we've done so far and kind of get you all into the loop about where we plan on going from here.

So as you may have seen in my last "Dev log 0" as I called it, we are working on a game in the Unity Game Engine.

The Unity Game Screen, showing a green capsule and a red square with text over its head reading 100/100

We made this choice as I kind of already knew the basics of C#. In that I had slightly more C# knowledge than I did for C++, also I have a slight history in unity because of my sheer amount of failed game dev projects. (Long ADHD/Caffeine fueled nights where I felt motivated and wanted to make the next science-based, 100% dragon MMO).

Well with our introductions in order, consider this the most productive I will ever look on these dev logs as I have a few weeks of work done already and am currently undoing some of it. (We'll get to that).

So, the basic Idea of the game (as it stands) is that it is a roguelite where you play as a monster trying to break out of a lab. That, and one of the main playable characters will have a leap attack.

Now having said that, what has gotten done so far.

well to list it here

Movement
Basic attack math
Basic Enemy AI
Basic player attacks
Enemy Spawning
Item Spawning Upon enemy death
And finally I (Just before writing this) Got the enemy a health indicator

Okay, so, what does any of that mean?

Well, it means we haven't gotten too much, but i feel pretty proud of where we are on the end of, maybe a month of work.

Mapping out everything that we have done on a program we use called Trello (Im a very visual person and it helps me keep focused) shows how much has actually been done.

Heres a look at the bugs I've patched out

Overall the game is coming along well. And it seems like we might be able to have this within a year or 2 ready for you all to be able to play.

At least it seemed that way until I had an epiphany. Then everything changed as the Fire Nation began to attack our systems. Okay that's a bit dramatic, but I had a realization that slowed my progress down a lot.

The way that i was doing everything was going to add work to my plate the second we tried to make a second character.

I had made everything tied to the stats of our character. So in each character we decided to make i would have to type essentially the same code.

SO what that meant was i tore down all of the work we made for the character in order to make a shell that we could fill with stats and abilities.

Then i made an even worse realization.

I've done the same thing with the enemies.

And the item.

Ive thought very linear for the entire game weve made, and with that realization, i began to tear down all of my progress. and restart from the beginning.

SO what does this mean.

The actual progress so far has been.

Basic attack math
Basic Enemy AI
Basic player attacks
Enemy Spawning
Item Spawning Upon enemy death
And finally I (Just before writing this) Got the enemy a health indicator

So for the next few weeks ill be remaking a lot in a more logical way. I've begun already earlier this week (a day or so before the last dev log).  So progress will slow and then be even faster afterwards.

With that though, expect that every week, to every few weeks I'll post an update of our work on the game since the last time onto here, and maybe a few funny things that we've encountered since.

But for now, that's really the only updates I have.

Thank you for reading, if you've gotten this far please feel free to comment your thoughts and share the blog with a friend who might like to follow the game production process with us.

Thank you all
